Now we could take the adjustment of the painting's width into account.As shown in the sketch by Raphael below, we could theoretically venture that about one-third of the width of the column has been cut off from both sides. This possibility was also mentioned in The Notes and catalogue of the complete paintings of Leonardo Da Vinci, by Angela Ottino della Chiesa, that "It was probably cut at the sides where two columns of about seven centimeters are faintly visible."
In adjusting the existing dimensions back to the original dimensions that theoretically Leonardo intended to be, we base our reasoning on the concept of the Golden Rectangle, which the Greeks and Renaissance artists and architects believed to have the most aesthetically pleasing proportions, in other words it pleases our eyes the most.
